Svaneti is the part of Georgia people remember longest — glaciers hanging above hay meadows, stone towers built for feuds that ended centuries ago, and villages where the road runs out and the footpaths begin. This private seven-day tour gives it the time it deserves.
You start and finish at Kutaisi International Airport, take in Martvili Canyon on the way north, then settle into the mountains: three nights in Mestia, a night in Ushguli beneath Georgia's highest peak, and a last night in the quiet Becho Valley under the twin summits of Ushba. There's a proper walk on most days — the Koruldi Lakes, the Shkhara glacier valley, the Shdugra waterfall — but the pace isn't punishing.
Mornings are for the trail, afternoons for a village, a tower house or a long lunch. Nothing is scheduled just to fill the day, and because it's private, the walks flex with the weather and with you.
Most flights into Kutaisi land late in the evening or in the small hours, so this is an arrival day only, planned around a late landing. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall whatever time you come in and takes you about an hour to Martvili, where your room is held from the previous afternoon — ready and waiting, with no reception to wake. Martvili is chosen over Kutaisi on purpose: it's quiet, it's fifteen minutes from the next morning's canyon walk, and it's a far better first night in Georgia than an airport hotel. If you land during the day, there's time for a short walk or a visit to the monastery before dinner.
A late breakfast and an unhurried start, then the short drive to Martvili Canyon. The path runs above the Abasha River along limestone walls hung with moss and ferns, past small waterfalls and a green pool that was once the bathing place of the Dadiani princes; when the water allows, a short boat trip takes you through the lower gorge. After lunch in Martvili you head north through Samegrelo and up the Enguri Valley — past the Enguri Dam viewpoint, along the long turquoise reservoir and into the mountains, with stops wherever the light is good. You reach Mestia in the early evening, in time for a walk among the towers before dinner.
The classic Mestia hike, done the sensible way. A 4WD takes you up the rough track to the Cross above town, skipping the steep, shadeless first climb and leaving you the best of the route: an open ridge walk gaining height steadily to the small alpine lakes at around 2,740 metres. The views widen the whole way — Mestia far below, the Ushba massif to the west, Tetnuldi to the east and the main Caucasus ridge behind — with a picnic by the lakes before the walk back down to the Cross. In the afternoon you visit a traditional Svan house and tower, where the ground-floor living hall and the defensive floors above explain the architecture better than any label; the Svaneti Museum, with its icons and manuscripts from the mountain churches, can be added if there's time. In the evening there's the option of dinner with a local family or a short cooking session — kubdari, the meat-filled Svan bread, and tashmijabi, potato beaten with young cheese. In low cloud the Koruldi panorama is the whole point, so the day may swap for the Zuruldi ridge above Hatsvali — lower, partly forested and rewarding in unsettled weather.
You leave Mestia after breakfast in a mountain vehicle and follow the Enguri upstream — one of the best drives in Georgia, treated as part of the day rather than a transfer, with stops for towers, churches and the valley itself as the road passes Ipari, Kala and the villages below Adishi. Lunch in Ushguli, then the afternoon on foot through its four hamlets. Chazhashi holds the densest surviving cluster of tower houses in Svaneti and is the reason Upper Svaneti is UNESCO-listed; above Zhibiani stands the small, dark, twelfth-century Lamaria Church, with the whole east face of Shkhara filling the window behind it. Later you climb to the ruined tower known as Queen Tamar's Castle for the best overview of the village and the head of the valley. Dinner is in a family-run guesthouse, and the evening is the reason to stay: once the day traffic from Mestia has gone, Ushguli is very quiet. Your luggage can stay in Mestia — you only need an overnight bag.
An early breakfast, then out of the village on foot along the Enguri. The valley opens quickly into a wide glacial trough with Shkhara — at 5,193 metres Georgia's highest mountain — closing the end of it. Most of the route is a gentle track through meadows and river braids, past grazing horses and cattle, the walls on either side growing steadily higher; the last stretch leaves the track for a rougher path over old moraine to the viewpoint facing the glacier snout. A picnic in the valley, then the same way back — the glacier is admired from a safe distance. Coffee in Ushguli, then the drive back down the Enguri to Mestia for a relaxed evening. For a shorter day, a local 4WD or horses can cover the flat valley section each way, leaving only the moraine path on foot.
After breakfast you drive west out of Mestia to Mazeri in the Becho Valley — under an hour, the last stretch on a rough village road. Becho sits directly beneath Ushba, the double-headed peak mountaineers call the hardest in the Caucasus and everyone else simply stares at. The walk follows the Dolra River upstream through hay meadows, birch woods and mineral springs, then climbs more steadily to the base of the Shdugra Waterfall, which drops in stages down a dark rock face at the head of the valley. A picnic by the falls, then back the same way. The rest of the day is free in Mazeri — the quietest night of the tour, and meant to be: after five active days, an evening with nothing planned and Ushba turning pink at sunset is not a wasted one. Carry your passport — the route runs through a border-control zone and documents are occasionally checked. Early in the season or after heavy rain, the upper river crossings can be unreliable; the walk then goes as far as the meadows and Ushba viewpoints lower down, or switches to the Chalaadi Glacier trail near Mestia.
A last morning under Ushba, then down the Enguri road out of the mountains. If your flight allows, there's a stop in Zugdidi for a Megrelian lunch — elarji, gebzhalia and the local approach to chilli that Svaneti doesn't share — and the Dadiani Palace and its park can be added for anyone curious about how the princes of Samegrelo lived, though the day is better slightly empty than crowded. You continue to Kutaisi International Airport in good time for check-in.
