The Gombori Pass: The Scenic Forest Road from Tbilisi to Kakheti

The Gombori Pass crosses the Tsiv-Gombori ridge at about 1,620 meters above sea level, carrying the northern road connection between Tbilisi and the Kakheti wine region, in Georgia — the country in the South Caucasus. It's one of two main routes between the capital and the Alazani valley — the other being the more direct southern road through the Kartli plains and Sagarejo — and although the two take a broadly comparable time, the road through the Gombori forest offers a journey of consistent scenic quality that makes choosing this route a pleasure in itself rather than a detour.

What is the Gombori Pass?

The Gombori Pass is a forested mountain road that crosses the Tsiv-Gombori ridge at around 1,620 meters, connecting Tbilisi with Telavi and the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. It's the more scenic of the two routes into Kakheti — a winding drive through dense deciduous forest, with viewpoints opening over the Alazani valley near the summit — and takes roughly two to two and a half hours from Tbilisi to Telavi. Paved throughout and beautiful in every season (spectacular in autumn), it's most often used as one leg of a Kakheti round trip, paired with the southern plains road for variety.

The drive

The pass road climbs from the Tbilisi outskirts into the Tsiv-Gombori hills, entering dense mixed forest within the first half hour of driving and keeping that forested character for most of the journey. The Tsiv-Gombori range is one of the lower ridgelines separating the Kartli basin from the Kakheti lowlands (its highest peak, Mount Tsivi, reaches nearly 2,000 meters, well above the road's high point), and the forest covering it is primarily deciduous — oak, beech, hornbeam, chestnut — giving it a strongly seasonal character. In spring the fresh growth is vivid against the pale early-Caucasian sky. In summer the road passes through complete canopy shade, noticeably cooler than the valley below. In autumn the pass justifies a journey of its own: the color change in the deciduous forest, typically peaking in October, produces the kind of foliage display the more arid landscapes of eastern Georgia rarely offer, and the combination of the winding road, the colored forest, and the occasional valley viewpoint makes autumn driving through Gombori one of the more purely pleasurable road journeys near Tbilisi.

Along the way, particularly near the settlements, local farmers often sell produce from roadside stalls — seasonal vegetables, cheese, honey, and the locally famous Gombori walnuts — a pleasant, characteristic stop on the drive.

The viewpoints

Several points along the road offer views that justify a stop rather than just a slow-down. The most significant comes near the road's high point, where the forest opens briefly on the southern side and the Alazani valley appears below — a first glimpse of Kakheti that establishes the geographical scale of what you're descending toward. The Alazani plain, wide and flat and covered in the vineyards and farmland of Georgia's primary wine region, extends to the horizon with the Caucasus foothills defining its far edge, and the descent from the forested ridge into this open, productive landscape gives the journey a clear dramatic structure.

Further down, as the forest thins and the road emerges into the Kakhetian foothills, additional viewpoints offer different compositions of the valley and the surrounding terrain. These stopping points are unmarked and informal — the road simply widens slightly where the view is good — but they're well known to local drivers and easy to spot.

The road

The Gombori pass road is paved throughout and maintained to a standard that makes it comfortable in a standard passenger vehicle for most of the year. The surface is generally good, the gradient manageable, and the width sufficient for two-way traffic on most sections, though some of the tighter curves on the upper sections need care when passing oncoming vehicles. In winter the upper sections can be affected by snow and ice, and the road may require chains or winter tires in the coldest months — it's worth checking conditions before traveling between roughly November and March, as the road can close temporarily after heavy snowfall.

The drive from Tbilisi to Telavi via the Gombori Pass takes about two to two and a half hours in normal conditions, broadly comparable to the southern route through Sagarejo and Gurjaani depending on traffic and your exact destination in Kakheti. The difference between the two is less about time than about character — the Gombori road is a mountain forest drive, the southern route a plains highway — so the choice is mostly about the kind of journey you want rather than about arriving fastest.

Combining with Kakheti

The Gombori Pass works best as the outward or return leg of a Kakheti itinerary, with the two routes — Gombori and the southern plains road — forming a natural circuit that covers different landscapes in each direction without retracing the same road. Taking Gombori going east, descending into Telavi and the upper Alazani valley before continuing through the wine region, and returning by the southern route is one of the most common approaches to a Kakheti day trip or overnight from Tbilisi, and it gives the fullest impression of the region's different geographical approaches. The pass road also passes near sights worth folding in — among them the Ujarma fortress and the Shuamta monasteries on the Kakheti side — if you have time on the descent.
