Dmanisi

Dmanisi is a small town in the Kvemo Kartli region of southern Georgia — the country in the South Caucasus — on a plateau at the meeting of the Mashavera and Pinezauri rivers, about 90 kilometers southwest of Tbilisi. Around 3,000 people live here, and the town itself is quiet and unhurried. What makes Dmanisi extraordinary is what lies beneath it: the oldest hominin remains ever found outside Africa, a discovery that changed the scientific understanding of when and how early humans first left their continent of origin. For that alone, it belongs on a very short list of places where the ground beneath your feet connects directly to the deepest questions about human history.

Why is Dmanisi important?

The archaeological discovery

Excavations at Dmanisi have run since the 1930s, when the site was first investigated for its medieval remains. The transformative discoveries came later — from the 1980s through the 1990s and 2000s — when archaeologists digging beneath the medieval layers found fossil bones and stone tools dating to about 1.8 million years ago.

The fossils include five skulls and associated skeletal remains from early hominins who walked upright, used simple stone tools, and lived in a social group. They're generally classified as Homo erectus, though the variation between the five skulls is large enough that they were initially thought to be different species. A landmark 2013 study examining all five together concluded the variation falls within the natural range of a single species — a finding with major implications for how paleoanthropologists classify early human fossils from other sites worldwide.

Before Dmanisi, the consensus held that early humans didn't leave Africa until they had reached a certain threshold of brain size, body size, and tool sophistication thought necessary to survive elsewhere. The Dmanisi hominins overturned that. They were small-brained by later human standards, used simple Oldowan tools of the most basic type, and yet had traveled thousands of kilometers from Africa to the Caucasus. The implication is that human dispersal out of Africa began earlier, moved faster, and needed less technology than previously assumed.

One skull — the fourth recovered, belonging to an elderly individual — added an insight of a different kind. The individual had lost all but one tooth long before death, with significant bone resorption in the jaw, meaning they survived a long time unable to chew solid food. That suggests other members of the group provided care, possibly processing food for them — one of the earliest known examples of social care behavior in the hominin lineage. The stone tools found alongside the fossils are Oldowan: simple flakes and choppers made by striking one stone against another. Animal bones at the site show cut marks consistent with butchery, though whether the Dmanisi hominins were hunting or scavenging is still researched.

The site

The archaeological site occupies the same promontory as the medieval town, and the layering of time periods here is one of its most unusual features. The promontory is a natural defensive position — a peninsula of high ground defined on two sides by the deep ravines of the Mashavera and Pinezauri rivers, with a narrow neck connecting it to the plateau. That geography drew settlement across radically different eras, producing a stratigraphic record that runs from the 1.8-million-year-old volcanic ash layer with the hominin fossils, up through Bronze Age remains, early medieval occupation, and finally the fortified medieval city.

The Dmanisi Museum-Reserve manages both the prehistoric excavations and the medieval remains, and a visit takes in both. The museum building, opened in 2011, sits directly over part of the active excavation area and presents the fossil finds and their scientific context with original specimens and high-quality replicas. The exhibition is well designed and makes a serious effort to explain the significance to visitors without a paleoanthropology background. Casts of all five skulls are displayed together, so you can see the variation that made the 2013 study so significant.

Outside, the excavation trenches and medieval ruins are accessible on foot along marked paths. The medieval fortifications are substantial — stone walls, towers, and the remains of streets and buildings across the promontory — and the Dmanisi Sioni Cathedral, dating to the 6th century with later modifications, still stands largely intact at the center. It's one of the older surviving Christian churches in Georgia and would be a significant monument anywhere else; here it shares attention with far more ancient remains directly beneath its foundations.

The medieval town

The medieval settlement at Dmanisi peaked between the 9th and 13th centuries, when it was an important trading and administrative center on the routes linking the Caucasus with the Middle East and Central Asia. The town was fortified, commercially active, and large enough to support real architectural investment — the cathedral, the defensive walls, and the residential and commercial remains all date mainly to this period.

The town declined after the 13th-century Mongol invasions and the regional instability that followed, and by the 15th century it was largely abandoned. That abandonment is partly why the remains are so complete: a town that keeps being inhabited is continuously rebuilt, obscuring earlier layers, while one that is simply left largely keeps the form it had when abandoned.

The setting adds to the impact. The promontory drops steeply into the river ravines on two sides, and from the edges the views across the rolling, semi-arid, agricultural Kvemo Kartli landscape extend for a long way. The sense of isolation and exposure, combined with remains spanning nearly two million years, gives the site an atmosphere that's hard to replicate.

Dmanisi sits within the broader Kvemo Kartli region, which has several other points of interest within a short drive. Bolnisi, with its 5th-century Sioni Cathedral carrying some of the earliest known examples of written Georgian script, is about 40 kilometers to the northeast. Rustavi, Georgia's second largest city and a center of Soviet-era heavy industry, lies further north. The semi-arid Kvemo Kartli plateau — unusual within Georgia's generally green, mountainous character — has its own austere appeal and is worth traveling slowly rather than just crossing on the way somewhere else.

How to get to Dmanisi

Dmanisi is about one and a half to two hours from Tbilisi by car, on the main road south through Kvemo Kartli. There's no direct marshrutka to the archaeological site itself: without your own transport, the practical options are a marshrutka to the town of Dmanisi plus a taxi for the final kilometers to the site, or an organized day tour from Tbilisi, which several operators run. The drive passes through the open farmland of Kvemo Kartli and gives a good read on this less-visited part of southern Georgia.

Best time to visit Dmanisi

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, with mild temperatures and clear skies that make walking the outdoor parts of the site pleasant. Summer can be genuinely hot on the open promontory, where shade is limited, so come in the morning if visiting in July or August. Winter is quiet and cool, occasionally bringing snow that transforms the landscape, and the low visitor numbers give the place a stillness that suits its character.
