Kutaisi has its own international airport, and for a lot of travellers on low-cost European routes it is the cheaper way into Georgia. These tours are built to start there rather than making you transfer four hours to Tbilisi first. From Kutaisi you are already among the things people come west for — Gelati and Motsameta, the Prometheus Cave, the canyons at Martvili and Okatse — and the road north into Svaneti is shorter.
