West to the sea in five days. This private tour runs from Tbilisi across Georgia's historic heartland to Kutaisi and the Black Sea at Batumi, then back to the capital — a lot of the country in a short, easy loop.
The first day covers the big sights between the two cities: the hilltop Jvari monastery, the old capital of Mtskheta, the cave town of Uplistsikhe and the Stalin Museum in Gori, ending in Kutaisi. Two nights there give you the Gelati and Motsameta monasteries, the Green Bazaar and the Prometheus Cave, before the road drops to Batumi for two nights on the coast.
Batumi is the payoff — a seaside city of botanical gardens, palm-lined boulevards and modern towers, with a full day to take it in before the train back east. It's a good first trip for anyone who wants more than the capital without a long itinerary.
The first day carries some real driving and the last is a four-hour train ride, but the middle of the trip is relaxed — and because it's private, the pace and the stops bend around you.
Your journey begins with a morning pick-up in Tbilisi and a drive toward Georgia's ancient heartland. First is Jvari Monastery, perched above the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, then Mtskheta and the UNESCO-listed Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Carry on to Gori for the Stalin Museum, in the town where he was born, and Uplistsikhe, one of Georgia's oldest cave towns carved into the cliffs, before arriving in Kutaisi for the night.
A relaxed day around Kutaisi. You'll visit Motsameta Monastery, set on a cliff above the Tskhaltsitela River, and Gelati, founded in the 12th century and on the UNESCO list, its churches lined with medieval mosaics and frescoes. Afterwards you'll walk through the Kutaisi Green Bazaar, with free time to see more of the city at your own pace.
Today you travel from Kutaisi to the Black Sea coast, starting underground at the Prometheus Cave, with its stalactites, stalagmites and underground river — including an optional boat ride when it's operating. Continuing west, if open, you'll stop at the Musicians Park in Shekvetili before reaching Batumi, where the rest of the day is free for the beach or the seaside boulevard.
A relaxed day on the coast. You'll start north of the city at the Batumi Botanical Garden, a hillside of plants from all over the world spread across a green headland above the sea. Back in town, you'll take in Europe Square and the Italianate Piazza, then head down to the water for the moving Ali and Nino statue, two steel figures that slide through each other by the shore, and the Alphabetic Tower nearby, its tall helix wrapped in the letters of the Georgian alphabet. From there it's a stroll along the seafront Batumi Boulevard and a ride up on the Argo cable car for the view over the city and the coast. The evening is free.
