5-Day Georgia Private Tour: Tbilisi, Wine & Sulfur Baths

5 daysPrivate Tours

Overview

Mountains and wine in five days. This private loop from Tbilisi pairs the high Caucasus with the country's oldest wine region — monasteries and snow peaks one day, cellars and vineyards the next.

It opens gently in the capital, with a walk through the Old Town and a look at the sulfur bath district the city grew up around. Then you head north on the Georgian Military Highway, climbing past the monasteries of Mtskheta and the fortress at Ananuri to Kazbegi, a small town beneath the snows of Mount Kazbek and the lone church at Gergeti — the view most people picture when they think of Georgia.

From there it's east into Kakheti, where Georgians have made wine in clay for 8,000 years. You'll taste it at a grand old estate and inside a cellar tunnelled into a mountain, wander the walled hill town of Sighnaghi above the Alazani valley, and end back in Tbilisi.

The days are full and the driving is real, but each evening lands you somewhere new — and because it's private, the whole thing bends around you rather than the other way round.

Itinerary

Arrive, drop your bags, and take Tbilisi slowly. You'll start at the vast Holy Trinity Cathedral, or Sameba, that rises over the skyline, then head into the Old Town — winding up its lanes to the Narikala fortress, crossing the Peace Bridge over the river, and walking through Abanotubani, the district of brick-domed sulfur bathhouses the city was built on and named after. A gentle first day before the mountains.

North today, up the old Georgian Military Highway into the Caucasus. First stop is Mtskheta, Georgia's spiritual heart — the great Svetitskhoveli cathedral in the town, and Jvari monastery on the hill above it, both UNESCO sites. Then a pause at Ananuri, a fortress standing over the turquoise Jinvali reservoir, before the road climbs to Kazbegi, a small town under the snows of Mount Kazbek where the air changes completely.

An early start for Gergeti Trinity Church — the lone church on the hillside with Kazbek behind it, and the view most people come to Georgia for. It's best in the morning, before the cloud sets in. Then a long, scenic drive east into Kakheti, the wine country, with a stop at the old Tsinandali estate to taste in its gardens before settling into Telavi for the night.

The full wine day. It starts at Khareba, where the cellar is a tunnel cut straight into the mountainside and the tasting happens deep inside. Then Sighnaghi, a small walled town of red roofs above the Alazani valley, and Bodbe, the quiet convent just below it. Back to Tbilisi in the evening for your last night.

A free morning, timed to your flight — a last coffee, one more walk through the Old Town, maybe some wine and churchkhela to take home. Then a transfer to Tbilisi International Airport, and off you go.

  • Final morning in Tbilisi;
  • Free time for last-minute exploration;
  • Hotel check-out;
