The Temple of Garni — a 1st-century Greco-Roman colonnaded temple of dark basalt on a raised podium, under a blue sky with clouds, Kotayk, Armenia

Overview

Five days through Armenia's best-known sights, based entirely in Yerevan. This private tour covers the capital itself — Republic Square, the Cascade and the Matenadaran — together with Etchmiadzin, the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the ruins of Zvartnots, before heading south for Khor Virap's view toward Mount Ararat, the wine region around Areni, and the cliffside monastery at Noravank.

A final full day combines the classical temple at Garni with the UNESCO-listed Geghard Monastery and an afternoon at Lake Sevan. With four nights in the same Yerevan hotel, there's no packing and re-settling between stops — each day is a loop out from the capital and back, at a pace that bends around you.

Itinerary

You'll be met at Zvartnots International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Yerevan. Check-in is from 14:00; if you land earlier, the rest of the day is free until your room is ready. Overnight stay in Yerevan.

A full day split between central Yerevan and the religious heart of Armenia just outside it. In the city, you'll see Republic Square, with its pink-and-yellow tuff buildings and singing fountains, and the Cascade, the monumental stairway of terraced gardens and modern sculpture rising above the city — both with views toward Mount Ararat on a clear day — plus the Opera House, Freedom Square and the Matenadaran, home to one of the world's great collections of ancient manuscripts. Outside the city you'll visit Etchmiadzin, the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church, and the 7th-century ruins of Zvartnots — together a single UNESCO World Heritage site. The day ends with a welcome dinner of Armenian food and local wine.

  • Visit Republic Square and the Cascade;
  • See the Opera House and Freedom Square;
  • Visit the Matenadaran;
  • Visit Etchmiadzin Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site);

South today, toward the Ararat plain and Armenia's wine country. Khor Virap is the day's best-known stop — a monastery on a low hill with one of the closest views of Mount Ararat from anywhere in Armenia, weather permitting. From there you continue to Noravank, a 13th-century monastery built into the red cliffs of a narrow canyon, before stopping in Areni, the centre of Armenia's wine region, for a tasting at a local winery. Return to Yerevan for the night.

A day combining Armenia's classical and monastic heritage with its biggest lake. Garni is the site of a 1st-century Greco-Roman temple, the only one of its kind in the former Soviet Union, perched above the Azat Gorge; nearby is the Symphony of Stones, a dramatic formation of tall basalt columns in the gorge below. A short drive on, Geghard is a UNESCO World Heritage monastery partly carved directly into the cliff face. In the afternoon you head to Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, and Sevanavank, its two 9th-century churches on a peninsula above the water, before returning to Yerevan.

Check out from your hotel by 12:00 and transfer to Zvartnots International Airport for your departure, taking with you Armenia's monasteries, mountain views and warm hospitality.
